The Pathway to Homosexuality

Question to ponder: at what point will God give this nation over to reprobation and ultimate judgment?  The moral culture of America is in free fall!  Our culture has rejected outright God’s Word, allowing the old immorality of the pagan world to be the new normal. Sexual behavior is no longer based on the biblical standard of right and wrong, good and evil.  Sexual orientation and behavior of heterosexuals and homosexuals is now based on human reason, experience, and opinion rather than the timeless and absolute truth of God’s Word. Thus, fornication, adultery, and homosexuality have swept our nation like a giant tsunami. The harvest of this immorality is coming to full fruition as abortion, divorce, broken lives, dysfunctional families, lethal birth control, a plunging birth rate, and an epidemic of STDs plague millions. Well, Christian, what about your life?  Are you guilty of leaving God’s moral high ground in preference for your own desires, opinions, and experiences?   What about your personal life, your marriage, and secret sexual desires and behavior?  How many professing Christians live in violation of God’s sexual boundaries?  Are you certain you will not be included among those whom God gives over to reprobation and judgment?  How many Christians must hang their heads in shame for their sexual behavior in the face of God and His unchanging moral truth?  Does the fate of the ancient sinkhole of Sodom and Gomorrah hang over America?  It is time for some serious self-examination on this topic.

A moral crisis greater than pen can describe confronts the covenant people in America and throughout the Anglo-Saxon world.  No one is immune from the ravages of sexual immorality. Families are being rent asunder, lives shattered, marriages dissolved, and families rendered dysfunctional by the sin of sexual immorality awash throughout the land.   Homosexuality is at the extreme edge of this sexual tide of immorality.   Sadly, the heinous sin of homosexuality is but one of a multitude of sexual indiscretions that plague this nation. Fornication, adultery, pedophilia, pornography, voyeurism, and a plethora of sexual sins cloud the moral skies over America.

The primary purpose of this essay is to examine the sin of homosexuality.  However, this heinous moral wrong cannot be isolated from all other forms of sexual deviancy, including fornication, adultery, pedophilia, pornography, and other acts of immorality.  Any deviation from the sexual boundaries imposed in God’s original design is sin.  As Christians should know, all sin must be either resolved in repentance before a holy God or judged in His courtroom!  May the Holy Spirit work in your life and allow this word of instruction to bring you to repentance.  If one sinner comes to repentance, may the angels of in heaven rejoice and the Lord Jesus Christ be praised!

 

Love and Acceptance are Basic Human Needs

 

All members of Adam’s family have a need for love and acceptance.   Love is a very compelling and essential need for all of Adam’s posterity.  God has established boundaries in which love can be expressed.   Outside the well-established boundaries of Scripture love cannot be found nor should it be sought for.   Real love, joy, happiness, fulfillment, and completion of the basic need for love and acceptance can only be found when we in humble submission live within the boundaries God has established for sexual desires and behavior.

 

Prevailing Attitudes toward Homosexuality

 

Many different attitudes now prevail about homosexuality, attitudes that are not limited to this egregious sexual sin; for it is becoming justification for other sexual deviancies including fornication and adultery. Consider the prevailing attitudes often used to justify homosexuality.  There are well-defined answers to these secular humanist assertions, which this thesis will attempt to resolve.  The goal is to simply let the reader know clearly the arguments used to justify homosexuality.

  1. Homosexuality is innate.  “I was born this way.”  “God made me this way.”  Or this: “Homosexuality is God’s gift to me.”  Mel White, a well-known spokesperson for so-called “Christian” lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender people said, “I have learned to accept and even celebrate my sexual orientation as another of God’s good gifts.”
  2. Another prevailing view is that sodomy, being innate, is fixed and cannot be changed.  How can one change the way God made a homosexual?  Surely to do so is to invite severe emotional problems in seeking to suppress deviant sexual desires.
  3. Homosexuality is an expression of love.  What could be wrong with two people of the same sex claiming to love each other in an exclusive relationship?
  4. Another argument is the assertion that Jesus Christ died to save all sinners—not change their sexual orientation.
  5. Nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus address the question of homosexuality.  Jesus is a God of love, and if He did not say it was wrong how, can anyone else?
  6. Many homosexuals claim to be Christian, loving, and kind.  How can anyone claiming to believe in God and profess Christianity while practicing homosexuality be wrong?
  7. The Bible does not condemn homosexuality. It is misinterpreted and misrepresented by people who oppose this lifestyle.

Let God and Scripture Speak

 

Friend, it is so tempting to digress and address each of these prevailing attitudes. Instead, let us spend our time by seeking instruction from the Word of God. Then the answer to the above opinions will be easily resolved.   The Holy Spirit inspired St. Paul to address the issue of sexual immorality, particularly homosexuality, in a clear and precise manner.  Let God and His Word speak to the subject of sexual deviation.  May all opposition to this clear instruction from heaven be emptied from our minds. 

St. Paul’s Epistle to the Christians in Rome was written from the city of Corinth, a leading metropolitan city where sexual immorality flourished, much like 21st Century America.  God addressed this problem through the Holy Spirit in Romans 1:18-32.  Please consider this passage: 

Romans 1:18:  “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men; who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”   Our holy God revealed to His children a precise and timeless and unchanging Word.  Those who profess a belief in God cannot hold this truth and at the same time uphold, defend, or practice unrighteousness.

Romans 1:19:  “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”  God placed His truth into the hearts of His children. Thus, it is intuitive (Romans 2:14-15). 

Romans 1:20:  “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” Surely God’s children can clearly discern from the visible things of creation that God does exist, and there is no excuse to deny Him and the reality of His Word.  There will be no excuse on the Day of Judgment for those who deny the plain proofs of God’s existence.  

Romans 1:21:  “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”  Fallen man surely knows God but refuses to acknowledge, worship, and obey Him.  Their minds are darkened as they came up with foolish ideas about what God is like and how He wants them to behave.

Romans 1:22:  “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”  Believing themselves to be wise in human reason, they show only how foolish and wrong they really are. 

Romans 1:23:  “And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptibe man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.”  Instead of worshipping the living, invisible God, fallen men creates his own image of God in wood and stone, turning them into idols such as birds, snakes, other animals, and even man himself.

Romans 1:24:  “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves.”   Having denied the one true and only living God these sinful people were given up by God to indulge in every kind and description of sexual immorality, using their bodies to engage in sinful and lustful acts that God condemns.

Romans 1:25:  “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”   Rejecting God and His truth sinful people  deliberately chose to believe lies, praying to the very creatures God has made, yet refusing to honor, love, and obey God who made all things.

Romans 1:26:  “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature.”   God gave them over to engage in the most vile forms of sexual deviation by allowing them to deny His original design for women and giving them freedom to dishonor their bodies; women with women, which is against nature itself.

Romans 1:27:  “And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.”   Sinful men, leaving God’s original design for sexual union with the woman, chose rather to indulge in open and defiant rebellion against God, engaging in shameful sexual behavior with other men and preparing themselves to face the awful penalty of judgment which they so richly deserve. 

Romans 1:28:  “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.”  As sinful men deny God’s truth, Jehovah gives them over to indulging in all the most despicable sexual sins their evil minds can imagine.

Romans 1:29:  “Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whispers…

Romans 1:30:  “Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents…”

Romans 1:31:  “Without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:”

 

When people deny God, reject His Word, establish their own moral standard, and proceed to indulge in one grievous sin after another, there comes a time when God gives them over to complete reprobation.  At this point, their sinful natures run wild, and they lose themselves in every kind of moral reprobation, particularly in their indulgence in sexual sins. They often end up in the mire of homosexuality.

 

Romans 1:32:  “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”   People who go into sexual reprobation are not blind to God’s coming judgment.  They know full well that the death penalty is reserved for such behavior; yet they gleefully indulge in this sin and entice others to follow them.


Four Important Points to Emphasize:

 

St. Paul makes four points regarding sexual immorality that must be underscored.  Sin, particularly sexual immorality, follows a pathology or progression.  Paul repeats this in three different ways in Romans 1:18-28.

  1. Sin distorts our honor and worship of God.  All sin, especially sexual deviation from God’s original design, dishonors God and focuses our attention, affection, worship, and glorification on other gods of our own making. When we fail to worship the one, true, and living God, we make gods of our own creation.   
  2. Sin distorts our beliefs and thinking.   Sexual immorality clouds our ability to think and believe God’s absolute truth.  The distinction between good and evil, right and wrong, becomes clouded and gray.    Our refusal to love and obey the one, true God results in foolish, vain, and prideful self-love and a mind given over to immoral, lustful desires.
  3. Sin distorts our desires.   When we reject God’s moral standards, human experience and opinion become the basis of our thinking; then there is nothing to restrain the innate desires that begin to seek literal and outward expression.
  4. Sin distorts our behavior.   The refusal of fallen man to worship and honor God, to establish right thinking upon the inerrant Word of God, and bring our desires under subjection of the Holy Spirit brings the sinner to act out the desires, affections, and imaginations of the heart in overt, sinful behavior.

 

These four points are covered in Romans 1:18-24, again in Romans 1:25-26, and finally in Romans 1:27-28.  Following mention of these four points, notice that God gives these sinners up to reprobation (Romans 1:24, 26, 28).

 

The Root Cause of Sexual Immorality

 

The root of homosexuality and other sexual deviant behaviors can be traced in a straight line to sin, the transgression of God’s law (I John 3:4; Rom. 3:20).  Any departure from the original design for sexual conduct established in Genesis 1 and 2 becomes the foundation of all forms of sexual immorality, including but not limited to homosexuality.  Our culture is saturated with sexual immorality, awash with every form of deviancy including pre-marital sex, extra-marital sex, incest, pedophilia, pornography, and other deviant behaviors. 

 

Genesis One and Two and the Pre-Fallen World

 

Those who advocate homosexuality claim that Jesus did not address homosexuality; therefore, it cannot be wrong.  This belief becomes the basis for justifying homosexual behavior.  Jesus did not spend time analyzing a lot of different forms of sexual immorality, including homosexuality, fornication, incest, bestiality, pedophilia, pornography, and other sexual deviant behavior and for very good reason.   The entire moral foundation of the New Testament rests on the principle of original design in sexual behavior set forth in Genesis one and two prior to the entry of sin.  Genesis chapters one and two clearly establishes God’s original design for human sexuality. It is upon this foundation that the entire New Testament rests. 

 

In response to the Pharisees’ questions regarding marriage and divorce, the Pharisees took them back to Genesis and God’s original design in the matter of sexual behavior.  In response to the Pharisees’ question whether it is lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause, Jesus responded by taking the Pharisees back to the biblical record of Genesis.  “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh.  What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:3-6; Mark 10:2-9).  

 

Jesus did what all who follow Him must do regarding sexual behavior: return to the original design that our sovereign God established for sexual behavior.  At the conclusion of His creation, Jehovah declared that everything that He had made was very good:  “And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31), including His plan for sexuality.  In Genesis 1:26-27 we read,  “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” On the basis of these clearly stated scriptural truths, we can conclude several important facts about sexuality:  

1) Sexuality is good.  The Creator Himself designed sexuality for His children.  We must acknowledge that sexuality is part of His creation and when practiced within His divine boundaries, is holy and noble.

2) Gender distinction between the male and female is God’s original design.   Both the man and the woman were designed to enhance the sexual distinction between the male and female. Genesis 1:28 establishes the primary purpose for sexuality in God’s original design.  “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”  This passage establishes the third point about God’s original design in sexual behavior.  

3) God ordained reproduction. Men and women are specifically designed to reproduce after their own kind.  Their body parts are designed to compliment each other to accomplish the command to be fruitful and multiply.

4) The fourth point in the original design for sexuality is found in Genesis 2:18-25, where God said (in verse 18):  “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make an help meet for him.”  Then, Genesis 1:20 informs us that among all the creatures God created (and that must have included all the distinct and separate races), “…there was not found a help meet for Adam.”  Our Mighty God then immediately set about to create a woman of Adam’s same kind:  “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall  upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.  And Adam said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh:  she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”   This passage of Scripture teaches us the fourth important point about biblical sexuality in God’s original design:

the woman was taken from Adam, who lost all of his feminine nature. Thus, Adam (the man) became incomplete without the woman, who became his perfect compliment, necessary to make him complete.  God declares this in I Corinthians 1l:8-9:  “For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.  Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.” 

5) Genesis 2:24 teaches us that God ordained marriage to be between one man and one woman of the same flesh (genetics): “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”  God especially designed marriage to be between one man and one woman of the same flesh; these two beings are to cleave together as husband and wife in the state of godly marriage.

6) Finally, we learn from Genesis 2:25 that the sexual union between the man and the woman in the state of marriage is also ordained of God:  “And they (the man and the woman) were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”  God actually commanded conjugal relations between the husband and wife in the state of marriage:  “Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.  The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband:  and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.  Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting, and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency” (I Cor. 7:3-5).

 

The Bottom Line

 

A careful review of God’s original design in Genesis 1 and 2 demonstrates that sexuality belongs exclusively to the state of marriage.   Every form of sexual behavior outside the divinely established boundaries of marriage is absolutely forbidden.  Genesis 1 and 2 forbids any and all forms of sexual behavior outside the marriage covenant between one man and one woman of the same genetic heritage or race. This means that fornication, adultery, incest, homosexuality, and other sexual sins are clearly in violation of God’s original design. They are sins that God Himself will judge severely.   The blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit remain the one and only remedy for those who traffic in these egregious sins.

God used the pen of St. Paul to remind the Corinthian Christians and all who will be Christian today how God views sin:  “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?  Be not deceived:  neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, not abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God” (I Cor. 6:9-10).   To the praise of God, some of these Corinthians came to repentance!  Today, God continues to call sinners to repentance and salvation:  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God”  (I Cor. 6:11).

 

The Plain Truth about Biblical Sexuality

 

All sexuality must be measured through God’s original design before the fall and sin’s entry.  From Genesis 3 to the end of the New Testament, all sexual sin is measured by the perfect picture of sexuality in original design established in the first two chapters of Genesis.  Any heterosexual or homosexual sexual expression, desire, action, or fulfillment outside of God’s original design is immoral and a sin against God’s moral standard.  It is difficult to imagine and almost impossible to believe that anyone passing through puberty and on into adolescence has not strayed outside God’s boundaries in expressing or seeking fulfillment of sexual desires either in thought or in deed.

 

God clearly indicts all of His children as being guilty of sin. All too often, sin is rooted in sexual immorality.  It is extremely important to underscore the compelling need to understand the moral boundaries that God drew around sexuality.  The Bible teaches that we are born into this world with a propensity toward sin.  All of the affections and desires of the heart are sinful. God declares in Jeremiah 17:9 that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”  We are all born into the world with a deceitful heart of pride.  Pride is expressed every time we set aside God’s moral boundaries for our own personal desires, pleasures, and affections.

 

Sin has impacted all of our lives.  We arrive into this world as depraved and sinful.  Psalm 51:5 records this statement from David:  “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Psalm 58:3 states this regarding the depravity of man:  “The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.”  We are instructed in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  “As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).  We learn in Genesis 8:21 that “…the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth.”  We are born into this world in trespasses and sins” with a bent toward “fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others” (Eph. 2:1-3).

      

Jesus teaches us that all sexual desires, affections, and actions outside of God’s moral boundaries for sexual behavior begin in the heart:  “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, and evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23).   In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:27-28), Jesus traced the sin of adultery to the motive of the heart and in so doing raised the moral benchmark for sexuality higher than any Old Testament standard:  “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:  But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

 

Sexual sin outside of God’s moral boundaries, beginning with fornication, adultery, pornography, pedophilia, and other forms of deviant behavior, destroys our Creator’s original design in heterosexual relationships. The sin of homosexuality is simply the final step into rebellion against God and His moral law.  Any deviant sexual behavior outside of God’s moral boundaries is sin. Homosexuality is certainly a deviant sexuality carried to the final stage of reprobation.

 

Outside the saving grace of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are bent, broken, depraved, and in urgent need of seeking every means possible, including regular prayer, Bible study, private and public worship, and encouragement from every possible source, to avoid being snared into deviant sexual behavior.  Our culture pulsates with sexual temptations.   Illicit sexual behavior is regularly shown on television, the cinema, and in commercials and is on public parade in almost every venue imaginable.

 

Summary

 

Finally, to return to Romans chapter one, it is important that we reach these conclusions—all sexual immorality is sin.  Any sexual behavior outside of God’s moral boundaries in Genesis 1 and 2 is sin.  The sexual union belongs between one man and one woman in the state of marriage.  No other form of sexual desire, fulfillment, or action is acceptable to God. To engage in such behavior is baneful sin and in clear violation of God’s original design. God teaches us in Romans 1:18-32 that sexual immorality distorts our worship, our thinking, our desires, and our behavior as the children of God.   The egregious sin of homosexuality is the final step into sexual reprobation.  Almighty God will judge us.  Repentance and applying the blood of Jesus Christ—these are the only remedy for deviant sexual behavior.  For this cause, may everyone who has stepped outside God’s moral boundaries in sexuality come to complete repentance by turning from sin and dead works of the flesh, fully confessing your sin, and by grace through faith believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit for spiritual victory over sins that certainly lead to eternal punishment in Gehenna.

 

Remember: the very same God Who rained fire and brimstone upon the sinkhole of Sodom and Gomorrah will again judge His people in the fiery furnace. Repentance before God, faith in Jesus Christ, and turning from sin: these are the only remedy to escape God’s judgment upon the wicked.
