GOD MUST BE RACIST!
A Liberal View of 2017’s Great American Eclipse
By Pastor Dan Gayman
Carve it in stone! The Mighty God Who created the heavens and the earth must, by His very nature, be racist! Why? Because this “supposedly omnipotent and all-powerful Creator” placed an astronomical sign in the heavens on August 21, 2017 that witnessed to the premise that God is racist. The solar eclipse that raced across America must have been a willful and deliberate act of the Creator Himself, Who usually does not exist in the minds of many. (God must have dusted Himself off and jumped off the shelf from His relegated corner for this event!) The solar eclipse of 2017 arrived mid-morning on the coast of Oregon and sped across the nation more quickly than the speed of sound, exiting the country at Charleston, South Carolina at 3:00 P.M. local time. The moon cast a shadow approximately seventy miles wide across the U.S. In the path of totality, the moon completely obscured the sun.
“What’s the problem?” So glad you asked! The problem that resulted in the Almighty being charged with racism is simple: too few people of color live along the path of totality, let alone the entire sections of the country able to witness at least a partial eclipse. Surely this was willful and deliberate prejudice from God, that He would favor mostly White populations, confirming yet again their “White Privilege” status. Folks, this might be the conclusion you would reach were you to read the article first appearing in Democracy: A Journal of Ideas and later in the left-leaning Atlantic Magazine under the title “The American Blackout.”
The author, Alice Ristroph, Criminal Justice Professor at Brooklyn Law School, published her article in the journal Democracy just prior to the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse and its curious path across a swath of America that is home to very few Blacks. Professor Ristroph used this solar eclipse as the perfect opportunity to vent her racial bias against Whites, claiming the solar event exploited the racial history of the various states along the path of the solar eclipse. The primary objective of her article apparently was to use the solar eclipse and its path of totality as a metaphor to show that America has historically favored Whites and made racial and political equality of other races difficult.
We now live in a country where humanist, progressive minds are so fixated on racism that they see everything, even the solar system, through the prism of race. Liberals use the race card to the point of absolute absurdity. It has reached a point where they employ the terms racist, White Supremacist, White Privilege, and Neo-Nazi to stereotype anyone who fails to subscribe to their leftist ideology.
The fact that the path of the solar eclipse traveled across the swath of country that is mostly White and—God forbid—voted largely for President Trump seemed to provide the obvious occasion for Professor Ristroph to profile the racial bias that pervades these states. That mostly White people live along this path surely must indicate the Creator—if there is one—is biased. This may seem like a real stretch from Liberals’ minds. But, folks, that’s how they think.
Following is a portion of Professor Ristroph’s lengthy article “The American Blackout” from the August 2017 issue of the Atlantic. If you wish to read the article in its entirety, reference this on the Internet.
“Oregon: Is mostly White. Only about 10 percent of Oregon residents do not classify themselves as White. “The land that is now Oregon was not, of course, always inhabited by white people, but as a U.S. territory and then a state, Oregon sought to get and stay white. Among several formal efforts at racial exclusion was a provision in the original state constitution of 1857 that prohibited any ‘free Negro or Mulatto’ from entering and residing in the state.
“The American West was not the land of chattel slavery—with some brief exceptions, slavery was illegal in Oregon before and after statehood. But among the dreams of the pioneers there was, at least sometimes, a dream of escaping racial strife by escaping black people altogether. As put by Peter Burnett, the architect of one racially exclusionary law in Oregon, the aim was simply to avoid ‘that most troublesome class of population. We are in a new world, under most favorable circumstances, and we wish to avoid most of those evils that have so afflicted the United States and other countries.’”
Idaho and Wyoming: These two states and a very tiny portion of Montana, not inhabited, appeared in the path charted by the Solar Eclipse across America. Both Idaho and Wyoming are more than 90% White, and those not classified as White are Latino, American Indian, and Alaskan. Ristroph goes on to say, “The astronomers tell us where lies the path of totality; the census tells us where live the people and what colors they are…A census is not just a matter of counting; it involves assessing and classifying and evaluating. This is particularly true of the U.S. census, a window into this nation’s dreams of totality and its always dangerous compromises…‘Black’ was not an option on the first U.S. census, nor was ‘colored’ or ‘Negro.’ The first census, in 1790, and the next two distinguished along the lines that mattered, along the lines expressly contemplated in the Constitution: free whites, other free persons, and slaves. The 1820 census introduced the term ‘colored.’ In 1850, ‘black’ and ‘mulatto’ became options. In 1890, the census kept the terms ‘black’ and ‘mulatto’ but also added’ quadroon’ and ‘octoroon.’ We needed such precision in the post-war era of Jim Crow, when even one drop of African blood rendered a person legally black. With whiteness, there was not compromise. Totality was everything.”
Editor’s Comment: Yes, at this time in America, sanity prevailed. People were likely to honor not only the Word of God, but also the millennia of history that had made it possible for the separate and distinct races to maintain their identity. While some people still retain this biblical and historic worldview about race, the majority are clueless regarding their ethnic heritage and the importance of racial integrity. If there is to be any future for any country, including America, we can only pray and trust that a Christian remnant will hold fast to the Bible’s call for racial separatism and maintaining racial integrity. Professor Ristroph continues to unveil her racial bias:
“To be clear, black and mulatto and octoroon were labels assigned by the census-takers. Not until 1960 did the people being counted get to check their own racial boxes. In 2000, they gained the ability to check more than one. The most recent census, in 2010, gave respondents the chance to identify themselves as white, ‘Black, African American, or Negro’ (a single category), or any of 13 other options, including ‘some other race.’ The next census, in 2020, will abolish the term ‘Negro.’ Race, like America, is a work in progress.”
Editor’s Comment: For millennia, Whites, as well as other distinctive races have practiced racial segregation. This is the very reason that as far back as the annals of history show, there have always been distinctive differences between the races that remain clearly observable. From the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 until the U.S. Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia, 1967, the United States of America recognized the inherent dangers of miscegenation, which throughout most of our history was prohibited by law. Any violations of this law were criminal acts punishable by fine and jail time. Think about it: for 360 years, America prohibited interracial marriage. Consider the long historical record of segregation in America: this remained an enduring tradition until well after the War of Northern Agression, when the Separate but Equal policy was well in place. This policy was upheld as late as the court case of “Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896. Segregation of the races was a matter of statutory law then and remained so until America rejected God and Scripture after World War II.
The U.S. military was segregated until 1948, when President Harry Truman ordered that it become integrated. Our public schools, colleges, and universities were segregated until the U.S. Supreme Court ordered them otherwise in Brown v. Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas in 1954. All remaining areas of segregation in America ended with the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. From this time forward, the push was on for the full amalgamation, integration, and assimilation of the distinct races into one racial hue. To the praise of Jesus Christ, there are still many White people who have not forfeited their racial integrity on the altar of racial suicide. Back to Ristoph’s article:
“Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri: This is America’s heartland, and also, literally, the land of compromise. When Missouri sought statehood in 1819, the United States consisted of 22 states, equally divided between those that permitted slavery and those that did not. Missouri’s request to enter as a slave-holding state threatened to upset the balance, but a kind of unity was preserved with the Missouri Compromise.
The deal allowed Missouri its slaves but drew a line across the nation, east-west to the Pacific Ocean, and mandated that slavery would be illegal in all other territories north of the line. Nebraska and Kansas, bordering Missouri to the west and lying just north of the compromise line, were thus to remain slavery-free. But the Missouri Compromise was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed the (white) people of those territories to decide for themselves whether to have slavery. A few years later, in Dred Scott v. Sandford, the Supreme Court would declare the Missouri Compromise to have been an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to intrude on states’ rights. A few years after that, the Civil War would begin.
“The shadow of the moon doesn’t care where it falls or who lives below. The total eclipse will be visible from Lincoln, Nebraska, the state’s capital, which reports a black population of 3.8 percent. The city of Omaha has a greater black population, of about 14 percent. It is home to many of the refugees from Africa and elsewhere that Nebraska has welcomed in recent years, many of whom now work in slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants. But Omaha is about 50 miles northeast of the path of totality.”
Editor’s Comment: The implicit message in this last statement is that the path of totality in the solar eclipse skips the larger Black population of Omaha. Whoops! I guess we can only feel sorry that the one area in all of Nebraska where the Black population is substantial was outside the path of totality. The great solar eclipse of 2017 passed quickly through thinly populated Iowa and Kansas, where, again, the Black population is insignificant. Back to Professor Ristroph.
“From Kansas, the eclipse goes to Missouri, still mostly bypassing black people…About a third of Kansas City, Missouri, is Black, but most of the city lies just south of the path of totality. To get the full show, eclipse chasers should go north to St. Joseph, almost 90 percent white and about 6 percent black, the place where Jesse James died…Moving east, the eclipse will pass part of St. Louis, whose overall population is nearly half black. But the black residents are concentrated in the northern half of the metropolitan area, and the total eclipse crosses only the southern half. Eight miles north of the path of totality is Ferguson, where Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown three summers ago…Brown’s death brought pain and protests and efforts to show that Black Lives Matter. It has drawn needed attention to the distribution of state violence by race, but the sad irony is that black lives have always mattered in this country. Since the founding, white people have been arguing about, first, how much a black life matters, three-fifths as much as a white life or something more or less; and second, for whose political benefit those lives will be counted.”
Editor’s comment: It is plain to see that this White professor is showing her bias as she justifies the rise of Black Lives Matter. BLM is an international organization that gained momentum in the United States in 2013 with the use of hashtag #Black Lives Matter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a young Black man. It became even more highly profiled following the Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland riots that followed the Trayvon Martin shooting. Either implicity or explicitly, the U.S. news media has promoted BLM in large measure since the election of Donald J. Trump in 2016.
In the next segment, Professor Ristroph uses the solar eclipse to lead into a rant against the Electoral College. Please remain calm as she continues to launch her campaign, implicitly arguing for the repeal of the Electoral College:
“The farther you live from other people, the more electoral power you wield. The shadow of the moon doesn’t care where it falls or who lives below. And in certain respects, the federal government designed in our Constitution doesn’t care where people live, either. We need the census tallies to determine how many representatives each state sends to the House, but the census is irrelevant to the Senate:
“Each state gets two senators, whatever its population. This arrangement is the result of another of the many compromises that made the Constitution possible. Of course, we probably don’t need the eclipse to remind us of the Constitution’s different forms of representation. After all, every four years an Electoral College and not the people directly select the President.
“Every four years we are reminded that each state gets as many electors as it has members of Congress, a system that magnifies the relative power of voters in less populous states. California has two senators and 53 representatives, giving it 55 electors for 39.25 million people, or one elector for every 713,000 people. Wyoming has two senators and only one representative, three electors for just over half a million people, or one for every 195,000 people.
“Sometimes it’s hard to recall why we did it this way. There were reasons to think of equality in terms of states and not just in terms of individual people—surely there must have been…The equal power of the states was enshrined at a time when states served white people, and never since have states’ rights been a particularly effective mechanism for racial equality…And looking ahead, we can expect the equal power of the states to exacerbate further political inequality of individual persons: The farther you live from other people, the more electoral power you wield.”
Editor’s Comments: The Electoral College remains a necessary and prudent provision in our U.S. Constitution. Yes, I realize all fifty-five men who attended the meetings where the U.S. Constitution was forged and thirty-nine signatures were affixed to the finished document were White. Yes, I realize that growing numbers of Liberals across the nation have an exceedingly low opinion of these fine White men who now are dubbed White Supremacists. And yes, these facts do not alter the wisdom and divine guidance these same men exhibited in forging a document as well-written and fore-seeing as it is. We should thank and praise God for these stalwart Founding Fathers. The genius of the Electoral College is that it prevents America from morphing into a complete democracy and eliminating many of the states from any political power. By giving every state two senators, regardless of its population’s size, no area of the country is denied fair representation. Every four years, 538 total electors meet every four years in December to cast their ballot for President. 435 delegates come from the House of Representatives, 100 from the Senate, and 3 from the District of Columbia, as per the 23rd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Each state has its portion of the delegates, making a minimum of 270 electoral votes required for any candidate to win the office of the Presidency.
In the Presidential Election of 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by a narrow margin—and this because she carried New York and California. Clinton received bout sixty-five million votes to just over sixty-three million for President Trump. Of note is that many of Hillary’s votes consisted of illegal aliens who were allowed to vote because not all states required voter identification. Without the Electoral College, Hillary would have won the U.S. Presidency. Those of us in rural America, almost White, would have been overwhelmed by the non-White urban populations. If the Electoral College were abandoned, just a handful of large states—California, New York, Texas, Illinois, and Florida—would determine who would be President. The rest of the country might as well never vote because their votes would be lost amid the sea of urban dwellers in a few densely populated states. Candidates for national positions in government would be forced to spend all their time in these heavily populated urban areas. The other parts of the country would simply not count.
Wise White men provided the genius behind the Electoral College. For all we know, the prayers that Benjamin Franklin called for when the delegates were not successful in working through their differences may have resulted in the intervention of our Eternal God Himself. Let’s keep the Electoral College. The day it dies, only the large cities will elect the President. The remainder of the country might as well not even go to the polls. Never surrender this sacred ground. Hold on to the Electoral College. You may wish to reference Reed Benson’s defense of the Electoral College in the 2017 Winter Watchman. Benson provides an excellent explanation of why the Electoral College is an imperative for rural people, especially Whites. You can anticipate tremendous pressure from Liberals to repeal the Electoral College from the U.S. Constitution before the 2020 election.
Regarding Kentucky, Tennessee, and finally South Carolina, the good professor continues to evaluate and judge America’s checkered racial history. Hopefully, you will find her comments of interest in spite of the bias found therein. Is it not good to be informed about how Liberals think and what they say? How else can we frame reasoned arguments against them?
“Former slave-holding states are still the home to most of America’s black population. In Kentucky, Tennessee, and eventually South Carolina, the eclipse will finally pass over black Americans. Even here, though, the path of totality seems to mark the legacy of slavery and the persistence of segregation more than any form of inclusion.”
Editor’s Comment: Blacks that have remained in the South tend to be far more peaceful than those that have been concentrated in the urban plantations ruled by Democratic city government officials. Black-on-Black crime and even Black-on-White crime is far less in the South than it is in urban areas of the North. Racial integration in America has resulted in far more discontent than once existed when America was a racially segregated society.
“Kentucky permitted slavery but never seceded and instead tried to remain neutral during the Civil War…the Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom only for slaves in rebel states and didn’t apply to border states like Kentucky. Nonetheless, the state grew increasingly disenchanted with Lincoln, and it would not ratify the Thirteenth Amendment (which formally abolishes slavery) until 1976.
“About 100 miles away from the path of totality in Kentucky is Berea College, the first interracial college in the South and the alma mater of Carter Woodson, who would become famous for insisting that black people have history, too. In the 1920’s, Woodson advocated for the celebration of Negro History Week. Woodson hoped that, one day, black history would be as important as any other history, recognized and remembered year-round; a century later, we’ve increased the allotted time from one week to one month…”
Editor’s Comment: Placing a spotlight on Negro history for a full month has only served to exacerbate and polarize the black race, thus creating more racial unrest. Historians have strained and stretched themselves in every way possible to conjure creditable Black history beyond that of this country. Many of the Negroes cited in their history are Mulattoes, not full Black people. At the same time, White Liberals have been pushing for more Negro history simultaneously to engaging in the systematic removal and revision of White history from American public schools, colleges, and universities. The goal of liberal educators and journalists seems to be sanitizing and scrubbing America clean of her White history.
Returning to Professor Ristroph, “It may be speed and not light, that is the most shocking thing about a total solar eclipse. The United States is about 2,680 miles wide. The total eclipse is not taking the shortest path across, but even so, it will take only about 90 minutes to cross the continent. The moon’s shadow will be traveling over 2,000 miles per hour when it makes landfall in Oregon, it will slow only slightly here and there on its path. In deference to what the locals call Tennessee time, perhaps, it is in that state the shadow will reach its slowest speed, just over 1,300 mph. Tennessee was practically the epicenter of the Civil War, the last southern state to secede and the site of more battles than any other state but Virginia.
Much of Nashville is built on a battlefield where Confederate forces fought (and lost) for almost the last time. About 600,000 people live in the Nashville area, and about 30 percent of this population is Black…But after Tennessee, the shadow regains some speed and travels over white people only again for a while. It catches the northeast corner of Georgia and the western tip of North Carolina. Though both these states have substantial black populations, both also include overwhelmingly white rural areas and it those areas that lie in the path of totality…”
Editor’s comment: I wonder if this Liberal professor ever wondered why the rural areas of Georgia and North Carolina, as well as most other rural areas of America, are populated by mostly Whites. The past sixty-five years has witnessed an increase of “White flight” from the racially integrated urban areas. These people have returned in increasing numbers to the rural areas of the nation, and not without good reason. They are in a much better position to perpetuate their own racial and cultural preferences away from urban areas of America. White Flight out of the coastal areas of the U.S. has been underway for many years: this drain of Whites is beginning to impact states like California, where Mexicans are now the majority. Professor Ristroph continues:
“Georgia will catch only a bit of the eclipse, but the state has already known well a different path of totality. Near the end of the Civil War, after Union forces captured the city of Atlanta, General William Tecumseh Sherman banished most of its citizens and burned its government buildings.
Sherman (Cump, to his friends) was an advocate of what’s now called total war. His stated aim was ‘to make Georgia howl’—to destroy not only the Confederacy’s economic and technological capacities to fight, but also the people’s will to resist. Sherman left Atlanta in the winter of 1864 and led 60,000 men on a March to the Sea. Using data from the 1860 census, which had counted livestock and crops in addition to people, Sherman charted a path for his men to forage for themselves even as they destroyed the state’s infrastructure…”
Editor’s Comment: Following the fall of Atlanta to Union Armies, General Sherman led some 67,000 soldiers from November 15 until December 21, 1864, on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. His primary goal following his capture of Atlanta was to “make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war.” These were his words as he ordered his army to forage their food from the farms of Confederate families. Sherman divided his army into two wings, about thirty miles apart, as they marched toward Savannah. Everything in their path was subject to potential confiscation. Sherman was convinced that in order to win the war, they had to break the morale of the Confederate people, who gave their determined soldiers their undivided loyalty and support.
Returning to Professor Rishroph, “In the last 12 or 13 minutes of the eclipse, it will probably pass over more black Americans than it does throughout all of its earlier journey…After Georgia, the eclipse will pass over a small piece of western North Carolina. The black population of these barely populated counties hovers around 1 percent, falling as low as 0.2 percent in Graham…The arc of the eclipse is long, and it bends toward Charleston. In South Carolina in the last 12 or 13 minutes of the Great American Eclipse, it will probably pass over more black Americans than it does throughout all of its earlier journey. After Greenville and Columbia, the eclipse goes out where so many slaves once came in: Charleston was the busiest port for the slave trade, receiving about 40 percent of all the African slaves brought into the country. Today, the Old Slave Mart is a museum. . . .”
Editor’s Comments: Much misinformation abounds in contemporary America about the slave trade. First of all, slavery can be traced back into the annals as far as they exist. North American Indians engaged in slavery when they roamed the continent where we now live. Most of the Negro tribes in Africa were involved in slavery. The slave ships that sailed from Africa and across to America were filled with slaves who had been collected out of the interior of Africa from black tribal chieftains and then sold to Jewish slave traders.
Consider the Israelites themselves: they were enslaved for several generations in ancient Egypt before they were finally liberated by the hand of Jehovah as He guided His servant Moses in the great exodus of Israel from Egypt into the Wilderness of Sinai. There are plenty of other instances when White people found themselves enslaved. Consider the vast numbers of English, Irish, Scottish, and German immigrants who arrived here as indentured servants to wealthy families that provided them room and board and eventually their freedom when the years of servitude were ended. Thousands of young Irish men were inducted into the Union Army without their consent when they arrived in America during the Civil War. Moreover, less than 6% of the Southern families owned slaves going into the Civil War. Southern Whites were not the only people who owned slaves. There were plenty of slave owners in the North, and some of the Southern Plantation owners that purchased slaves were Black planters. Finally, the status of many Black slaves was much better than the Blacks now living in the Democratic controlled, urban plantations of America.
Compare life in the ghetto of a large American city to the life of a Black slave living in the South where they had their own gardens, ate well, and because of their value were generally well cared for. This statement is not to be construed to mean that this author supports slavery. I do not now, nor have I ever, supported the ownership of slaves from any race.
England and then America were among the first nations on the planet to end the practice of slavery. Today, Black people who were never slaves are angry at White people who were never involved one whit in slavery. I do think it is time to move on and not burden those living today with the events over which neither they nor their ancestors for several generations have been guilty. If today White Liberals wish to surrender their wealth in reparations to the Blacks who never lived a single day as a slave, why not go for it? Returning again to Professor Ristroph: “And then the shadow goes to sea, still indifferent to the Earth below, indifferent to the little creatures here, indifferent to the people indifferent to their own histories. Or perhaps we are not indifferent, but just no more capable than butterflies and bees of seeing the long path and of deciding to change it.
“The Great American Eclipse illuminates, or darkens, a land still segregated, a land still in search of equality, a land of people still trying to dominate each other. When the lovely glow of a backlight fades, history is relentless, just one (expletive) fact after another, one damming fact after another.
“America is a nation with debts that no honest man can pay. It is too much to ask that these debts simply be forgiven. But perhaps the strange path of the eclipse suggests a need for reorganization. We have figured out, more or less, how to count every person. We have not yet found a political system in which every person counts equally.”
Editor’s Comments: following is a summary of my thoughts regarding the ultimate objective of the progressive, secular, humanist thinking represented in this article. White Liberals will never be content until America is a country without borders, a nation where every vote counts equally across the spectrum of the entire country. They cannot be happy until the American Republic as established by the Founding Fathers is turned into a full-blown democracy.
This coveted liberal dream visualizes the day when the Electoral College will no longer be a part of the political process. This will mean that sparsely populated white areas of the country will be at the mercy of the Democratic mob of sub-culture people packed into the urban jungles of America.
When all of White America has been engulfed in a fully integrated society, where every race essentially loses its unique, distinct original design from our Creator and the Brazilian hue paints everyone the same shade of brown, White Liberals will have achieved their definition of nirvana. In this transcendent state of bliss, where there is neither poverty nor riches and where subjects in America consistently think-a-like, walk to the same drum beat, worship their own god, speak whatever language fancies them, and everyone is the same shade of brown, then perhaps Liberals will be happy.
When all the wealth has been equally distributed, when everyone has been reduced to the same status, and when the liberal elites are able to choose their own path to life, liberty, and happiness, then Liberals may be content.
What white liberals may not know is that the path they seek to travel is a very well worn trajectory in human history. Socialism morphs into full-blown Communism, which then translates into a totalitarian police state ruled by a handful of iron-hand elitists who kill anyone who objects. When that day comes, as it surely will if the liberal agenda is fully realized, people will lose their liberty, will live in poverty, and will exist only to serve in subjugation the elitists in their wealth and splendor.
Remnant Christians will be well served and their children only when they are convicted to a point where they gather themselves in enclaves throughout the rural areas of America, practice racial separatism in the family and worship, and hold fast to the unchanging and eternal laws and commandments of the Living God. Building strong marriages, multiplying children, and providing Christian education for their children apart from government run schools must be a high priority.
Raising large gardens, becoming involved in the production and preservation of our own food, and moving toward as much self-sufficiency as possible—these are critical components going forward. Preserving the Christian family and the local church—these should be our highest priorities for long-term survival in the new America forged by the radical transformation now underway.
