The United States Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015 in Obergefell vs. Hodges crossed a moral and legal divide that, when I think upon it, leaves me numb and my spirit grieved. In a remarkable divergence from custom, all four dissenting justices wrote separate opinions blasting the majority decision to declare homosexual marriage legal. Consider the words of Chief Justice Roberts: “Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity of commitment to a new partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.” Justice Thomas wrote: “The majority invokes our Constitution in the name of a ‘liberty’ that the framers would not have recognized, to the detriment of the liberty they sought to protect.” Justice Scalia was scathing in his dissent: “The Supreme Court of the United States has descended from the disciplined legal reasoning of John Marshall and Joseph Story to the mystical aphorisms of the fortune cookie.”
In an utter abandonment of Constitutional law, centuries of settled Christian tradition, and even plain common sense, the five majority judges have elevated their judicial tyranny as high as the noonday sun. In less than ninety days, this tyranny has already manifested its beastly head, as predicted by Justice Alito: “I assume that those who cling to old beliefs will be able to whisper their thoughts in the recesses of their homes, but if they repeat those views in public they will risk being labeled as bigots, and treated as such by government, employers, and schools.” As of this writing, a lowly county clerk in an obscure corner of Kentucky, Kim Davis, is languishing in jail because she happens to agree with the four dissenting justices that homosexual marriage has no basis in the Constitution or American history. Having been abandoned by the highest court in the land, Davis now has to defend her position with an appeal to the Supreme Judge of Mankind, God and His revealed Word.
Mrs. Davis's quiet civil disobedience in her remote little town has brought down homosexual activists from distant locations and the heavy gunnery of biased big-city media networks in an attempt to crush this small lady’s Christian conscience. “She must obey the law of the land!” they screech. “All government officials, high and low, must conform to the civil rulers' decrees!”
What hypocrisy! As Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee recently pointed out, where was their indignation when big-city mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco defied the law of California and married scores of homosexuals on the steps of city hall? Where was their outrage when sanctuary cities like San Francisco began protecting illegal immigrants in flagrant violation of existing federal law? No, the liberal courts ignored Mr. Newsom’s disobedience of the law while the corrupt media praised and feted his arrogance. Is there no consistency in the words and deeds of the liberal elite that dominate our nation’s discourse?
Actually, there is. They are constant and dedicated in their opposition to anything that reminds them of God, the Bible, or traditional moral values. The result is before our eyes: unabashed persecution of Bible-believing Christians. Gavin Newsom was celebrated for violating existing marriage law; Kim Davis was imprisoned. Hmmm, would you care to speculate which one takes the Bible at face-value?
Now hear my voice. Let us all take warning: if the people of the United States continue to allow evil and sin to be codified into “law,” the moment will come when the Great Judge of Nations will have had enough. The blood-soaked soil of tens of millions of aborted children will cry out, and the sickening stench of homosexuality will rise to the heavens, and Jehovah will have no choice but to execute justice upon a once noble and righteous nation, now grown wicked and perverse. While His mercy is wide for those who repent, His wrath will be terrible and His destructive force complete upon those who defy Him.
